When news broke that hackers had taken control of a television station in Wenzhou, China, and then broadcast anti-communist slogans to millions of viewers, security researcher Rahul Sasi was not surprised.
Sasi, who is based in India, presented at the Hack in the Box security conference earlier this year. He noted several possible vulnerabilities that would allow hackers to compromise a cable system over the Internet. These hackers could interrupt the TV stations’ programming and replace it with other content.
While few such hacks have been reported, Sasi told MC that he expects more similar attacks as digital cable creates more connections between home televisions and the Internet and hackers look for new ways to manipulate public opinion.
