As it turns out, Apple has released a new two-factor implementation of Apple ID, iCloud.com's authentication system, requiring users who have the extra layer of security to enter a special code before accessing online applications.
With the new app, Apple is expanding on two-factor security; before the change, iCloud.com was accessible via a simple password. The feature was first pointed out by reader Stephan.
