When you think of Intel, you usually think of computer chips, but it seems the company has a surprise in store. Intel today released a social app for iOS and Android devices called Pocket Avatars. The app sends video messages, and uses animated avatars to relay your facial expressions.
Intel VP Mike Bell told TNW that Intel Labs often comes up with new futuristic technologies that never make it to products, but Bell decided that this facial tracking app was too good to pass up.
The Pocket Avatars app uses your phone's front-facing camera to record video and, by combining your voice with your expressions, creates animated avatars. About half of the characters it uses are available for free, and more can be purchased for $0.99 each. Messages can be sent via SMS, email, and Twitter.
While the application may seem outside of Intel's core business, Bell said the company has "every intention of continuing to develop and improve it."
