The University of Illinois is the first university in the US to offer athletic scholarships to gamers.
Robert Morris University in Illinois is the first university in the US to recognize professional gamers as athletes by awarding them athletic scholarships.
Starting from the new semester, the university will accept the first 5 players of the popular game “League of Legends” and will cover 50% of their tuition costs, which is approximately $19,000 each. The university has selected a total of 27 players who will then be divided into teams that will compete in a tournament with a scholarship as the prize.
Team sponsors may often pay for their players' education, but this is the first time that an American university has offered a scholarship to gamers, recognizing them as athletes and of course paving the way for similar actions by other universities.
