Tens of thousands of gamers were enslaved to a bitcoin botnet after downloading a cracked copy of the popular game Watch Dogs from various file-sharing services.
The infected torrent, from which the copy protection had supposedly been removed, had almost 40,000 active users (seeders and leachers) and had been downloaded at least 18,440 times on May 23, through this website.
Pirates are reporting on online forums that the torrent, uploaded by the popular group “Skidrow,” contained Bitcoin, along with a copy of the game.
The malware consisted of two executable files, installed in the AppData\Roaming\OaPja folder, and significantly slowed down the performance of infected systems, consuming up to a quarter of their processing power.
Most sources have removed the torrent, while analysts are trying to identify the actors behind the attack.
If you have also downloaded this game from a pirated site, check your computer with an antivirus program, especially if you notice any unusual activity.
