Canonical has created the most widely used version of Linux for the desktop, but it has also developed one of the most successful server operating systems. In fact, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu OpenStack, and the Ubuntu, Juju, are now running on the world's most powerful supercomputer.
At the moment, the world's most powerful supercomputer is called Tienhe2 and is located in the Guangdong province of China. According to its manufacturers, the servers use Intel Xeon, Intel Xeon Phi co-processors and a 160Gb per second interconnect for ultra-fast data transfer between nodes. It has held the record since 2013.
“Ubuntu OpenStack operates with 256 high-performance nodes and this will increase to over 6400 nodes in the coming months. The nodes will be available for government services in Guangdong province, as well as other NUDT partners for analysis, inventory and applications in electronic governance.”
“And on both OpenStack and Ubuntu, the Juju tool will run on Tianhe – 2 to allow NUDT partners rapid deployment and management in very high‑performance cloud environments”, the official announcement says.
Canonical is making a push into the Chinese market, and the company has already tried to cover the desktop with Ubuntu Kylin, which has reached a very good point, coinciding with Microsoft's announcement of the end of "life" for Windows XP.
