Everyone needs faster Internet, and Google is coming to help with its new system where every video thumbnail on YouTube will now load faster.
Responsible is the most “lightweight” WebP image format that has been used for a considerable period on Google Play and is now coming to YouTube. The result of this change yields a 10% faster page load and an even greater gain in the volume of data consumed internally during video loading.
This move is intended to primarily help users who have slow Internet connections, while the already existing experimental version of Chrome that includes WebP is considerably faster. As the Chromium Blog notes, the observed difference ratio reaches 25% during image decoding and will provide a noticeable difference in loading large images and video pages.
