WhatsApp Update: Multiple passkeys and stronger 2SV

The messaging app, owned by Meta, says that over 1 billion people now rely on a passkey to log in to their WhatsApp accounts. The new ability to add multiple passkeys is especially useful for users who use the app on multiple devices, including iOS and Android. This new way of managing passkeys offers greater flexibility and security, as users can better manage access to their devices and prevent unauthorized access.

For two-step verification, WhatsApp is upgrading the one-time code that was previously a six-digit PIN to a full password. This password can be longer and include alphanumeric characters and special symbols, thus offering an extra layer of protection. This upgrade is especially important, as cyber threats often exploit weak passwords to gain access to sensitive information.

The latest new security feature, currently only available for users Android, provides more information about callers who are not in the user's contacts. When receiving a call from such a person, users will see details about the caller, including country and whether they are members of the same WhatsApp groups. This feature can help users avoid scams and unwanted calls, allowing them to make more informed decisions about whether to answer or not.

WhatsApp noted: “Scammers are banking on urgency – now you can take a breather, seeing more information before responding.”

This announcement follows WhatsApp’s recent unveiling of Scam Alert, an optional feature that uses artificial intelligence to flag suspicious messages from non-contacts. Using artificial intelligence to detect suspicious messages is another step towards protecting users from malicious activity. As scammers become increasingly sophisticated, incorporating such technologies is essential for user safety.

Strengthening account security is critical to protecting personal data and preventing malicious attacks. With the increasing reliance on digital communications, users need to feel safe when using these platforms. WhatsApp’s new features give users more tools to protect their accounts and maintain their privacy .
