ChatGPT for Teens is a new feature announced by OpenAI for users ages 13 to 17, bringing together existing protections and new safety features under one unified experience. The move comes at a time of growing public pressure over how AI tools are impacting young users, with other platforms implementing their own age checks and teen-specific protections. OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT for Teens as the next step in its commitment to the safe and responsible use of AI by minors.

ChatGPT for Teens is “ an experience designed to help teens learn, think critically, deepen their understanding, and use AI with confidence ,” OpenAI said in a blog post Tuesday. The feature will be automatically applied to users who declare their age between 13 and 17 , as well as those the system estimates are under 18 based on behavioral signals. Children under 13 are not allowed to use the platform, according to OpenAI’s age policy.

The company has already developed an age prediction system that uses signals such as account creation, typical usage patterns, and hours of activity to automatically identify users who are likely under 18 and place them in a more restricted experience. This automatic age prediction system was introduced earlier this year and is the foundation on which ChatGPT for Teens.
ChatGPT for Teens: What protections does the new feature offer?
ChatGPT for Teens enables a number of stricter protections by default. Specifically, it includes stricter restrictions on prohibited or sensitive content, such as violence, depictions of self-harm, sexual or romantic roleplay, dangerous challenges, and content related to eating disorders. The system will also display warnings and safety information around sensitive topics, while giving parents the ability to set “quiet hours” and receive notifications when the system detects a potential safety risk.

Additionally, OpenAI has retrained the model’s behavior toward teens to avoid romantic roleplay and not act as a substitute for real human relationships. For the first time, the company introduced dedicated ratings for users under 18 as part of the GPT-5.6, signaling that teen safety is now built into the testing process of every new model release, rather than just a post-release policy.
Other features aim to encourage “healthy and balanced usage,” such as reminders for sensitive image posts, personalized onboarding for teens, and customization options like colors and voice variations. OpenAI is also adding new “ responsible homework reminders , ” which can recognize when a teen is trying to “skip a task” and redirect them to ChatGPT ’s dedicated study mode . Teens or parents can also set “study hours” that automatically activate study mode during designated times.

ChatGPT for Teens and the broader AI market: Competition and regulatory pressures
The launch of ChatGPT for Teens is part of a broader trend in the AI, where major platforms are moving away from one-size-fits-all products toward personalized experiences for adults, teens, and professionals. Google has been pushing Gemini for family use, while Meta, TikTok , and other platforms have expanded age verification and safety measures for teens.
Child online safety experts have long pointed out that self-reported ages are not enough for effective protection. That’s why automated age prediction and parental controls are now becoming core features of any serious AI.

While OpenAI is pitching this move as a new experience focused on teens, many of the protections it describes aren’t new. The release largely unifies existing safeguards with a few smaller additions and tweaks. Parental controls and study modewerereleased about a year ago, and the company announced last month that it would be showing more frequent break reminders to teens. But the unification has value in its own right, creating a cohesive and recognizable experience for young users.

The future of AI for teens looks set to shift toward better age verification, more parental controls, and stronger monitoring for signs of emotional or mental health risk. If regulators continue to push for age-assurance standards, specialized AI for teens could become mandatory across all major platforms. According to The Verge, OpenAI states that “access should be accompanied by protections that reflect teens’ developmental stage, foster real-world relationships, and support healthy usage over time.” ChatGPT for Teens is the next step in that direction.
