Researchers from the Arbor Security Engineering and Research Team (ASERT) are tracking malware campaigns designed to steal debit card details.
The report they have published focuses on the campaigns involving the Dexter and Project Hook malware.
Experts emphasize that POS (point-of-sale) devices are just as vulnerable to cyberattacks as any other Windows-based machine. However, the risk is increased because security updates are not created at regular intervals, like on computers.
As for the Dexter campaign, researchers say it is most active in the Eastern Hemisphere. The three versions of the malware have been identified as: Stardust, Millenium, and Revelation.
The Revelation variant has generated great interest because, as reported, it is capable of stealing data via FTP.
The full report, called “Dexter and Project Hook Break the Bank,” is available on the Arbor Network website.
