OpenAI has acquired TBPN, a popular web show that often hosts interviews with AI and other leaders technology. The show, which airs live daily and often lasts for hours, sees competitors such as Bloomberg and CNBC. Past guests have included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as well as executives from Meta, Microsoft, Palantir and Andreessen Horowitz.

TBPN host John Cooganwrote in X that the show would “remain the same.” He added, “This is a significant moment of fulfillment for me, as I have worked with OpenAI CEO Sam Altmanfor over a decade. He funded my first company in 2013… We are thrilled to have more resources than ever.”

TBPN averages 70,000 viewers per episode and has generated over $5 million in advertising revenue. According to The Wall Street Journal, revenue is projected to reach over $30 million by 2026.

What does the acquisition of TBPN by OpenAI mean?

OpenAI’s acquisition of TBPN clearly shows that the battle in artificial intelligence is not just about models and products, but also about controlling the narrative. Through an already successful show with strong influence and access to leading people in the field, OpenAI gains a direct channel of communication with the audience and the market. The fact that figures like Sam Altman are already appearing there further strengthens this strategy, turning TBPN into something more than media: into a tool of influence.

However, the assurance that the show “will remain the same” leaves room for skepticism. When an independent media outlet is taken over by such a powerful company, is it easy to fully maintain objectivity and a critical perspective? On the other hand, increased resources may raise the quality and scope of the content to new levels. The bet, therefore, is whether TBPN will manage to balance the authenticity that made it stand out and the strategic aspirations of its new “umbrella.”
