The Greek prime minister's "ambitious" plans and priorities may talk about free Wi-Fi in our country within the next year, however, somewhere in distant Los Angeles , they are announcing their exact plan to make "free Internet access for all" a reality within the same period of time.
The city council is preparing an RFP (request for proposal) for companies that want to win the process, so that they can deploy a broadband network in the city, which will provide Internet access to everyone. One small detail: our prime minister may have called it “wireless Wi-Fi” (a terrible expression), but in LA they don’t use such phraseology…
To get back to… America, this rather ambitious project is “looking for” the company that will fully assume the cost of the relevant infrastructure via a fiber optic network, as well as all the procedures to complete the project. This is a project that is estimated to cost around 3 to 5 billion dollars, with the aim of offering free Internet access to all residents with speeds from 2 to 5Mbps (we imagine with advertisements), free public hot spots throughout the city, as well as access packages with a fee to those individuals and businesses who want even higher speeds, which will reach up to one gigabit! Did you say anything?
The RFP-based proposal submission process is expected to take over a year, however, the plan is quite ambitious and “dazzles” us with its speed and prospects, making us want to move to LA soon.
Now you'll tell me, if the announcements about free Wi-Fi were a reason for immigration, right now our borders would have queues, but, in the case of LA, we wouldn't want to face the announcements with the same attitude we had towards those of our own prime minister, as things are probably "a little" more serious...
