Microsoft has fixed a serious security vulnerability affecting Markdown files in Notepad .
In Tuesday's patch notes, Microsoft said that a malicious user could carry out attack remote code execution by tricking users into clicking a malicious link within a Markdown file opened in Notepad.

Clicking on the link launches unverified protocolsthat allow attackers to remotely upload and execute malicious files on the victim's computer. Microsoft noted that there is no indication that attackers are already exploiting the Notepad vulnerability (CVE-2026-20841), but it issued a fix for the issue in Tuesday's security update.
Microsoft brought support for Markdown to Notepad in Windows 11 last May. The move contributed to criticism that Microsoft was filling its operating system with unnecessary apps, including adding new features and artificial intelligence capabilities to apps like Notepad and Paint.
