The entertainment giant has released the first footage of an all-new animatronic character — Olaf from Frozen — who is no longer just mechanical, but a robot powered by advanced artificial intelligence, paving the way for a new way for guests to interact with their favorite characters.
An Olaf who… thinks and moves on his own
A series of posts on social media and a short documentary on YouTube have presented an Olaf much more advanced than we've seen before. The new robot moves autonomously through the park's Paris environment, expresses emotions through detailed facial and limb movements, and makes humorous comments to visitors, as if it were straight out of the movie.

In promotional videos, the snowman-star struts with impressive liveliness through the world of Frozen at Disneyland Paris, while Imagineers explain that the animatronic is based on techniques reinforcement learning that allow the robot to "learn" through its movement and interaction with the space. It is no longer a programmed puppet, but an entity that adapts in real time.
New technological background: The collaboration with NVIDIA and Google DeepMind
To achieve this leap in innovation, Disney partnered with two of the biggest players in the AI industry: NVIDIA and Google DeepMind. Together, the companies developed a new open-source simulation system, codenamed Newton, and a specialized simulator called Kamino. These tools allow animatronics to train in digital environments before appearing in public, reducing development time and increasing the complexity of their movements.
Disney confirms that such frameworks will form the basis for a generation of robotic characters that will far surpass anything we have seen in theme parks to date.

Realism on a new level: From the removable nose to… magical snow
The new Olaf robot doesn't just impress with its AI. Imagineers took care to recreate every detail of the character. His nose and hands are removable, just like in the Frozen franchise. His body is covered in special iridescent fibers that mimic the texture and feel of snow, creating an almost cinematic materiality.
Added to this is an AI system for natural dialogue, which allows Olaf to converse with guests without pre-set scripts. Disney calls him “the most expressive and realistic character they have ever created” — and the footage bears that out.
A new era of Imagineering
In an official post, Disney described the project as "a new chapter in character innovation," where technology, storytelling, and collaboration combine to bring the magic from the screen to the real world. The company says the progress is so rapid that it can now create and introduce new characters to the parks at an unprecedented speed.
Olaf's model joins a wider family of advanced robots like BDX Droids and HERBIE, which reflect Disney's ongoing effort to redefine the guest experience.
