Apple quietly added a small but notable improvement to Spotlight in macOS Tahoe 26.1, which was released on Monday. The update introduces new Clipboard history controls for Spotlight, allowing users to decide how long copied items remain accessible in search results.

Previously, Spotlight could optionally retain clipboard contents for up to eight hours, but the latest update extends that flexibility with three options – 30 minutes, 8 hours , or 7 days. There’s also a new “Clear Clipboard History” button in System Preferences ➝ Spotlight, giving users the ability to manually delete saved clipboard data without having to delete their entire Spotlight search history.

These changes should be welcomed by anyone who wants more granular control over how long potentially sensitive information is retained by Spotlight, and they bring the feature closer to third-party clipboard management apps. Apple didn't mention the change in the macOS 26.1 release notes, suggesting it may just be one of many improvements made to macOS Tahoe 26 without being announced.

The ability to manage clipboard history is especially important for users who work with sensitive data, such as personal information or business documents, as it provides an additional privacy protection mechanism. By adding these new options, Apple shows that it is taking into account its users' needs for greater security and control over their data.

The ability to clear the clipboard history with the click of a button is also a welcome addition, as it gives users the flexibility to manage their data in a more direct and easy way. This is especially useful in situations where users need to quickly delete sensitive information from their system.

Apple continues to improve macOS with small but meaningful changes that enhance the user experience and data security, and expanding the clipboard settings in Spotlight is a good example of this strategy. It's likely that we'll see more such improvements in the future as Apple continues to evolve its operating system to meet the growing demands of its users.
