Atlassian acquires The Browser Company

Atlassian thecompany behind productivity tools like Jira and Confluence, is making a bold move into the web browsing space, announcing the acquisition of startup The Browser Company for $610 million. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of Atlassian's fiscal year, which ends in December.

Atlassian acquires The Browser Company

The Browser Company was founded in 2019 with the aim of challenging the dominance of giants like Google with Chrome and Apple with Safari. Within a few years, it managed to capture the attention of the ecosystem thanks to Arc, a browser introduced in 2022 that stood out for its design and collaboration features, such as organizing and sharing groups of tabs. In 2025, the company introduced Dia, a more lightweight solution that experimented with the use of artificial intelligence, allowing users to chat with an AI assistant to organize multiple tabs at once.

Despite their innovation, these projects have not achieved the widespread acceptance that would make them mainstream. The company's co-founder and CEO, Josh Miller, admitted that Arc felt more like a specialized tool for professionals than a mass consumer product. The halt in development of new features for Arc fueled speculation that it could be opened to the open source space. At the same time, large companies such as OpenAI and Perplexity have reportedly approached the startup about a possible acquisition.

Why Atlassian cares

The acquisition marks a strategic shift for Atlassian. Until now, the company had focused primarily on collaboration and project management software. However, as its co-founder, Mike Cannon-Brookes, explained, the browser has become the primary “desktop” for millions of users. In his view, traditional browsers, designed primarily for simple navigation, do not adequately meet the needs of those who work intensively in digital environments.

Cannon-Brookes said Arc has helped him personally organize his work more efficiently, thanks to its filing and file categorization features . The experience convinced him that there is room for innovation in a field that has been stagnant for years.

A different vision from competitors

Atlassian doesn't seem to be looking for a quick "PR stunt" through the acquisition, as Cannon-Brookes commented. Instead, the goal is to create a more unified ecosystem: the Arc experience and Dia's AI capabilities will be integrated with Atlassian's collaboration tools, such as Jira and Trello.

This could give users a whole new experience, where browsing, project management, and collaboration are combined into a single, intelligent workspace. The browser goes from being just a gateway to the internet to a central productivity tool.

Investment and competitive framework

The Browser Company’s 2024 valuation was $550 million, backed by well-known investors including Atlassian Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, Figma co-founder Dylan Field, and LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman, suggesting that the company had already gained significant trust in the startup ecosystem.

At the same time, the browser market is gaining new interest due to the integration of artificial intelligence. Perplexity is working on its own AI browser called Comet, while Google and Microsoft continue to invest in features that bring AI closer to the end user. Within this context, Atlassian's move can be seen as an attempt to gain a strategic advantage by bringing AI not only as a search tool, but as part of everyday work management.

The future of browsing with an Atlassian stamp

The acquisition of The Browser Company is not just about owning another product. It reflects a new vision: to make the browser the “operating system” of productivity, where all the necessary tools work together and adapt around the user with the help of artificial intelligence.

If the experiment succeeds, Atlassian will have created something that neither Google nor Apple has managed to achieve so far — a browser truly designed for work and collaboration, not just navigation.
