Brave Software , true to its philosophy of enhanced privacy, announced that its browser will block Microsoft's Windows Recall feature by default , so that it cannot take screenshots of browsing windows. Windows Recall , introduced for Windows 11 systems , has caused a stir in the tech community and privacy experts. Recall captures screenshots every few seconds , processes them using AI, and allows users to search for what they did previously on the system, even using natural language.
Although Microsoft claims that this is a productivity tool, several experts warn of the huge privacy implications, as the snapshots may include personal data, passwords, financial information or medical records.

Brave: A clear stance in favor of privacy
In a recent announcement, Brave explained that it will disable Recall logging across all browser tabs from the start. The move is based on the company’s philosophy of “privacy-maximizing defaults ,” noting that users’ browsing history should not end up in a permanent database , especially when there are scenarios involving sensitive personal or social issues .
Brave's technical approach to achieving this relies on Microsoft's SetInputScope API , which specifies that browser window contents will be marked as " Private " ( IS_PRIVATE ) . Thus, Windows Recall will skip these windows when recording.

Brave isn't the only one to react to the controversial feature. In May, popular encrypted messaging app Signal also announced that recording Recallby enabling a DRM management flag in the app's environment. This prevents Microsoft's system from capturing app screens.
