Zoom acquires Common Room to expand into AI sales

Zoom ,the company best known for its video calls, is looking to expand its influence beyond the call itself, focusing on what happens before it. Its recent acquisition of Common Room, a Seattle-based startup, is a major step in that direction. Common Room specializes in analyzing potential customer buying signals through artificial intelligence, allowing Zoom to delve deeper into sales software for businesses.

The acquisition was announced Thursday, without disclosing the financial value of the deal. The acquisition is expected to close in the coming weeks, subject to regulatory approvals. Common Room develops what the industry calls “market intelligence.” Its software aggregates a company’s disparate data, from CRM records to product usage, and combines it with real-world signals to create a single, personalized view of each shopper.

AI agents then take on the difficult task of researching, prospecting customers, and writing customized messages.

For Zoom, the acquisition is a strategic move toward growth. The Revenue Accelerator already listens to sales calls and guides reps. Common Room adds the missing piece, providing insights into which accounts are in the market, who the buyers are, and why they should reach out, before anyone calls. Zoom’s chief strategy officer, Abhisht Arora, said revenue teams will now have a single, unified platform, with the goal of reaching the right person at the right time with the right message.

This market fits into a broader pattern of growth strategies. Zoom, a $25 billion company, is based on video, a market that has stalled in recent years. According to GeekWire, Zoom has been integrating AI into sales, support, and collaboration, aiming for a second act as an “action system” for work.

It is not alone in this effort, as other companies, such as Aikido and Adobe, have acquired artificial intelligence startups in recent weeks.

Common Room is a local success story. Founded in 2020 by four tech veterans from Dropbox, Facebook, AWS , and Madrona, the company emerged from obscurity in 2021 with $52 million in funding and was named GeekWire’s Startup of the Year in 2022. Its client list now includes companies like Notion, Okta, Snowflake, and Anthropic.

Common Room CEO Linda Lianhas pitched the sale as an accelerator for the company. Joining Zoom, Common Room is connecting its “graph” to the conversations sellers have every day and to the artificial intelligence that can act on it. The bet, shared across the industry, is that AI agents living inside the tools sellers already use will quietly reshape the way deals are made.

While the terms of the deal remain secret, the direction is clear. In enterprise software, the fight to integrate AI into everyday workflows now goes straight through the sales team. Zoom no longer wants to simply host the call. With the integration of Common Room, Zoom aims to become a complete solutions provider that covers all of a business’s needs, from initial customer contact to closing the sale.
