Waymo: New chapter for robotaxi in Denver and Seattle

Waymo , the Alphabet subsidiary that pioneers autonomous driving, announced that it is officially expanding its robotaxi operations to Denver and Seattle . These are two strategic city choices, as they are particularly demanding driving environments with frequent extreme weather events, which is a "challenge" for any autonomous transportation technology .

Waymo robotaxi

Initially, Waymo’s vehicles – the SUV Jaguar I-Pace and the Zeekr – will be driven by safety drivers to accurately map new areas and collect critical data. The company will then enable software self-driving, with the goal of offering fully autonomous rides in Denver by 2026 and Seattle shortly thereafter (when local regulators allow).

Hard tests for Waymo's technology

The choice of the two new cities is not accidental. Unlike Phoenix, where Waymo already operates successfully due to relatively stable weather conditions, Denver and Seattle offer much more complex challenges: heavy snowfall, strong winds and heavy rainfall. This data will help the company technology its in extreme scenarios, making robotaxis more reliable and safe in a variety of conditions.

The goal is for technology not to be limited only to «ideal environments», but to prove that it can also respond to everyday challenges faced by millions of drivers.

The fleet's expansion

Waymo is not starting from scratch. The company recently revealed that it has more than 2,000 robotaxi in the United States. Of these, about 800 operate in the greater San Francisco area, 500 in Los Angeles, 400 in Phoenix, 100 in Austin, and dozens are already operating in Atlanta. The size of the fleet ranks Waymo as the most mature and organized company in the autonomous driving space, far surpassing most of its competitors.

At the same time, the company plans to expand its commercial services within 2026 to cities such as Dallas, Miami and Washington DC, while it has just received permission for testing in New York – a particularly demanding metropolitan area with high traffic density.

Exploratory moves and «road trips»

In addition to permanent installations, Waymo is also adopting a more flexible “road trip” strategy. It has already sent vehicles for limited testing in cities like Philadelphia, and is planning similar visits to Las Vegas, San Diego, Houston, Orlando and San Antonio. In this way, the company is gaining experience with different traffic patterns, infrastructure and local regulations, constantly expanding its knowledge base.

The big picture

Waymo’s continued geographic expansion shows that robotaxi technology is moving out of the “experimental” stage and into large-scale implementation. While regulatory hurdles and safety concerns remain, the company’s strategy clearly shows that it is preparing for a world where autonomous taxis will be an everyday reality.

Competitors like Cruise and Motionalare also investing heavily in the same space, but Waymo appears to have a strong lead. The fact that it already operates in so many cities and has such a large fleet makes it a market leader.

What does this mean for the citizens

For residents of Denver and Seattle, the arrival of Waymo's vehicles paves the way for a new form of transportation: greener, more economical and, in the future, the company claims, safer than traditional driving. At the same time, the tests will highlight areas that need to be improved, from interaction with pedestrians to traffic management in difficult weather conditions.
