AI camera detects drunk drivers

AI camera will detect drunk drivers and inform the police so they can take appropriate action.

Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be identified by a pioneering artificial intelligence camera currently being trialled in Devon and Cornwall. The state-of-the-art machine can detect movements and behaviour on the roadthat are consistent with drivers who may have been drinking or taking drugs.

Police further down the road will be able to stop the vehicle, speak to the driver, and test for alcohol and illegal drugs.

Geoff Collins, general manager of Acusensus in the UK, said: “We are delighted to be conducting the world’s first trials of this technology here in Devon and Cornwall.”

The AI camera can be quickly moved to any road in any county, without warning. Drivers will be unaware of its existence and will only realize they have been arrested when the police pull them over.

“We will all be safer if we can detect the problem before it causes an incident that could destroy lives,” said Mr. Collins.

Acusensus cameras have been used in the past to help police catch drivers using cell phones or those not wearing seat belts.

Devon and Cornwall Police believe the AI camera could help reduce road accidents. Drunk drivers are six times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash, so their immediate detection by the AI camera is important.

"Our officers can't be everywhere," said Supt Simon Jenkinson, whose team checks roads in the two counties.

«As members of the Vision Zero South West road safety, we are committed to doing everything we can to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.».

This innovative technology aims to enhance road safety by providing law enforcement with accurate data that can help identify and address potential hazards before accidents occur. If the trials are successful, the AI camera could become a valuable tool in reducing road accidents and promoting safer driving practices across the region.

However, some might argue that AI cameras pose threat privacy. While it is important to ensure road safety, there are legitimate concerns about the use of AI cameras in public spaces and the potential for misuse or abuse of personal data. Therefore, it is important to have appropriate regulations and safeguards in place to protect individual rights while achieving the intended purpose.
