Linux Kernel 6.13 released

In a rare and pleasant coincidence, the Linux Kernel this year coincided ideally with the holiday season.

Linus Torvalds, creator and lead developer of the Linux kernel, announced the release of Linux 6.13-rc1 on Sunday, December 1, 2024, marking the end of the merge window for this development cycle.

In his announcement to the Linux Kernel mailing list, Torvalds expressed optimism about the timing of this release, noting that, perhaps for the first time, the development cycle does not clash with the holiday season.

This favorable timing allows developers to focus on stabilizing version 6.13, while also giving them time before work begins on version 6.14 in January.

Torvalds also mentioned that the next release, 6.14, may be smaller than usual due to the holiday break, which he sees as a positive development. "I don't think we need to change the release schedule, but we can definitely relax a little bit and make the next release smaller," he said.

The release includes a large number of updates and changes to various kernel subsystems. Notable improvements include:

  • Major upgrades to the Virtual File System (VFS).
  • Driver updates in many areas.
  • Improvements for architectures such as ARM64, x86, RISC-V and others.
  • Upgrades to memory management and process scheduling.
  • Updates to file systems such as Btrfs, XFS, and F2FS.
  • Improvements in networking, virtualization (KVM) and security management.

Although driver updates remain the dominant change, Torvalds noted that this cycle is seeing more changes to the VFS core than usual.

The release also includes progress on integrating the Rust into the kernel, with updates to Rust file abstractions and PID namespace bindings.

As the kernel community continues to test and stabilize this release, the timing of the release offers developers a welcome break during the holiday season. This break can contribute to a more relaxed and focused development cycle for the coming year.
