This doesn't appear to be just a pilot program, as YouTube appears to be showing ads during video pauses for all users as well.

YouTube will display ads while pausing a video.

YouTube has become extremely aggressive when it comes to advertising. The platform now has many ad slots, which are often impossible to ignore.

YouTube displays ads that can be skipped or not, before and after a video. The platform has started showing ads even 30 seconds before the video starts.

If the volume and frequency of ads weren't enough, YouTube will start serving ads every time viewers pause a video. In May, Google announced that the YouTube platform would introduce new advertising formats.

At the time, Google had subtly hinted that it was exploring a new form of advertising, where ads would appear on the screen whenever a video was paused. While the company didn't reveal a timeline for the development, it has now reportedly integrated ads that flash during a video pause.

How and where does YouTube place ads?

YouTube appears to have started showing banner ads when a video freezes. These ads don't appear immediately.

Many YouTube users have reported that the platform starts showing ads a few seconds after pausing a video. Specifically, the user interface first places the video in a smaller frame, followed by the appearance of an ad on the right side of the screen.

These ads appear to be static for now, as YouTube is rolling out ads without sound. The YouTube app for Smart TVs has started showing ads in this new space. Below each ad is a “Skip” button, while all ads display the name of the company or business that sponsored them. In addition, there is a circled “i” that offers more information about the advertising message.

Many YouTubers who have tried the new ad format have noticed that Dunkin' Donuts appears to be the only advertiser, but it's likely that other advertisers will soon choose to place their ads.
