Conway Medical Center is the first hospital in South and North Carolina to use a state-of-the-art robotic system to perform surgeries.
The new Da Vinci 5 is designed by Intuitive and will join the older Da Vinci system. Both will be used for procedures such as surgery cancer, hysterectomies and prostate removal.
Aaron Epstein, chief surgeon at Conway Medical Center, said the new Da Vinci 5 robotic system will make things better for patients.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Horry County and the surrounding area. They will get cutting-edge technology that is not even available at all the major hospitals in our area," he said.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Da Vinci 5 for use since March 14. The new robotic system brings over 150 improvements over the previous generation. Specifically, the FDA noted:
- improved accuracy
- next-generation 3D imaging and image processing
- expanded computing power and data
- greater help to the surgeon
Conway Medical Center's robotics program is part of a vast, ever-evolving global industry. Epstein, who has performed thousands of robot-assisted surgeries, says the Da Vinci 5 doesn't use artificial intelligence to guide the procedure.
