Traumatic love syndrome: Device helps you overcome a difficult breakup

Scientists are creating a devicethat promises to help you get over a difficult breakup, especially if you suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Love is a powerful emotion that can have both positive and negative effects on our lives. When a romantic relationship ends, it can leave emotional scars, resulting in "trauma syndrome."

Traumatic love syndrome refers to the psychological impact of a failed romantic relationship or unrequited love. It can manifest in a variety of ways, including depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues , and difficulty forming new relationships.

To address this problem, scientists have created a device that promises to help you get over a difficult breakup.

Research has shown that by wearing this special headset (worth £400) for just a few minutes a day, a person can alleviate the unhappiness, negativity and depression they may feel after the loss of a relationship.

In one study, 36 volunteers with post-traumatic stress disorder wore the device, which stimulates the brain with a mild electrical current. Transcranial stimulation is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that uses low-voltage current to target specific areas of the brain. It involves placing electrodes on the scalp and delivering a mild current to stimulate or inhibit neural activity in targeted areas.

The volunteers were divided into three groups. Each wore the transcranial stimulation headset for 20 minutes, twice a day over a period of five days.

In one group, the current targeted the dorsal prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In the second, it targeted the ventral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). In the third, the headset was turned off.

The two targeted areas are involved in regulation emotion. The researchers also targeted these areas because previous studies have shown that there is a neuropsychological link between separation experiences and grief and that specific prefrontal regions are involved.

Traumatic love syndrome, which usually occurs after a difficult breakup, can cause emotional distress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, obsessive thoughts, and a higher risk of suicide. Patients also often feel insecure, helpless, and guilty.

The study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, concluded that for the symptoms of this syndrome, stimulation of the dorsal prefrontal cortex was more effective than stimulation of the ventral tegmental area, although in both cases symptoms were reduced.

" Both DLPFC and VLPFC protocols significantly reduced LTS symptoms and improved depressive state and anxiety after the intervention, compared with the sham group (group with headset turned off) ," concluded researchers from the University of Zanjan in Iran and Bielefeld University in Germany

A month after stopping the treatment, the volunteers felt even better. The study authors said: "These promising results require further testing."

"Since negative emotions predominate after the failure of an emotional relationship and emotional dysregulation occurs, emotion regulation is considered the main goal of treatment. Although there are effective therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, innovative and complementary therapeutic approaches are valuable, because these treatments do not work in all patients," the study said.

While more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of tDCS for post-traumatic stress disorder, these initial findings are promising. If proven effective, it could offer a non-invasive and accessible treatment option for those struggling with the aftermath of romantic relationships.
