WhatsApp: It will let you know when your conversation is encrypted

Encryption is a critical aspect of messaging apps, as it ensures the security of conversations. WhatsApp will now let you know when your conversation is end-to-end encrypted, with the app continuously improving security through increased visibility of encryption banners.

In recent beta versions of WhatsApp since 2021, an encryption indicator has been added under the name of the contact or group.

WABetaInfo's report reveals that the feature first launched in January with WhatsApp's Android beta version 2.24.3.17. Currently, this indicator is appearing more widely with the latest beta (2.24.6.11), according to the report. The indicator simply says "end-to-end encrypted" and is followed by a small lock icon.

However, this banner will not remain permanently active. According to WABetaInfo, it is expected to appear temporarily and then be replaced by the last login indicator. Of course, users always have the option to check the encryption independently by going to the Encryption from the contact information page. Whether these changes significantly affect users remains a matter for debate. However, it will undoubtedly prove useful for new users who may have doubts about encryption standards.

About three years ago, users were abandoning WhatsApp en masse and switching to alternative messaging apps like Signal. However, Meta 's service has made significant progress since then, finally abandoning the controversial privacy policy battle and moving towards becoming one of the most trusted messaging services.

WhatsApp provides extensive information within the appthat explains its encryption standards. In addition to chats and video/voice calls, status updates on the platform are also end-to-end encrypted, as defined in its mobile apps. Information about encryption standards can be found on a detailed FAQ page that provides all the necessary information.

The new feature will likely be added to versions 2.24.6.7, 2.24.6.8, and 2.24.6.10 of WhatsApp beta for Android, according to WABetaInfo. The early beta has been available for a while now, suggesting that its integration into the final version may be close.
