Tax officials participated in fraud via social media

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced that about 150 employees have been investigated and some have been dismissed after they were involved in a tax refund scam via social media.

The scam involved the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Australia, with some people submitting false claims for GST refunds through fake businesses.

The scam went on for a long time and exposed billions of Australian dollars in GST refund fraud. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has been facing an increased number of alerts about suspicious tax refunds, which have led to a business called “Protego”. A number of ATO officials have fallen victim to identity theft, while others have been found to be the perpetrators, with penalties including dismissal.

A company activated a VAT number and filed false VAT returns, defrauding thousands of dollars, with the person responsible being sentenced to prison. Other offences resulted in prison sentences of seven and a half years. The ATO continues to address the impact of the fraud and take action to eradicate it.

The Serious Financial Crime Task Force in Australia continues its investigations into individuals involved in financial crimes. Despite 150 Australian Taxation Office (ATO) employees being suspected of tax fraud, the investigation has revealed that the ATO’s efforts have prevented an additional A$2.7 billion in suspicious GST refunds. In addition, A$123 million has been recovered and a huge amount is being collected for fraudulent refunds.

However, the investigation found shortcomings in the ATO’s business framework for detecting GST fraud, as well as chaos in the data . GST fraud detection methods are described as “largely adequate”, but there is a lack of organisation, with audit registers scattered across various business lines without a centralised system.

This results in the ATO relying on internal discussions to assess effectiveness, rather than aggregated data.
