Orbcomm, a major provider of ELDs for the trucking sector, is facing a ransomware attack that is limiting its customers' ability to use its Fleet Manager service, which includes Blue Tree ELDs, the company confirmed.

It may take up to two weeks to resolve the issue.
“On September 6, 2023, ORBCOMM experienced a ransomware attack that temporarily impacted the FleetManager platform and BT product suite, which is used by some of our customers to track and monitor their vehicles,” said Michelle Ferris, the company’s vice president. “Following the discovery of the issue, industry-leading external cybersecurity experts were retained to conduct a thorough investigation. It is important that all of our other systems and service offerings remain fully operational and customers are using them as normal. We remain in contact with all affected customers and will continue to provide timely updates as the recovery and investigation processes progress.”
In an announcement to Orbcomm customers on Wednesday, provided to FreightWaves by an Orbcomm customer, the company says it “aims to restore full use of the BT product line and corresponding platforms, as well as RCOM reporting, by September 28.”
The service outage affected the BT product range, which forms the core of Orbcomm’s ELD offering, as well as a reporting service known as RCOM Reports. Specifically, the outage affects the Blue Tree ELD models BT500 and BT504.
According to the announcement, in conjunction with this date, BT system users have received permission from the Federal Highway Safety Agency to continue using handwritten logbooks until September 29, unless the BT system is restored to service before then.
The note also states that Orbcomm has found no signs to suggest that customers' personal networks are or were at increased risk as a result of this incident.
