Zoom announced that users will soon be able to chat with its AI Companion to help them search for documents, prepare for meetings, and complete office tasks.

Less than a month after public backlash over how it trains its AI tools , Zoom announced that it is ready to move forward with a ChatGPT -like chatbot to integrate into its video calls and companion chats. Zoom believes the enhanced AI Companion tool can improve productivity for its users, but there is also a risk that there will be concerns about the type of data the AI is trained on.

According to a Zoom article, Zoom’s AI Companion essentially represents a refresh and expansion of ZoomIQ, which allows users to summarize conversation threads and generate automated responses to written questions in the chat. The following year, Zoom announced that users would be able to chat with the AI Companion and ask for help with office tasks, from preparing for a meeting to retrieving brief summaries of previous meetings and searching for specific documents. In Zoom, users will be able to interact with the AI Companion during a meeting to submit support requests or seek answers to questions asked in real-time. Essentially, Zoom wants its Companion to act as a virtual assistant.

These new features won't be released until spring 2024, according to a company article.

Smita Hashim, Chief Product Officer, said, “With artificial intelligence powering your Zoom capabilities, you can save time, improve the quality of your work, and stay connected with your colleagues no matter where you work. Leverage the guidance provided to guide you to improve your skills, like creating a great presentation.”

Zoom says its approach to AI is based on both its own advanced large-scale language model, combined with Meta’s Llama 2, OpenAI, and Anthropic. This “federated approach to AI,” according to Zoom, will allow the AI Companion to quickly incorporate new developments from many different sources.

The chatbot tools are just one of many AI-powered technologies Zoom is introducing to boost productivity for its platform users in the coming months. The company says that AI Companion, which is already available to paid subscribers , will allow users to watch a recap of a meeting and ask specific questions about the topics discussed. After the meeting is over, Zoom promises that AI Companion will automatically transcribe the session, dividing it into “smart chapters,” highlighting important information.

By the end of September, Zoom announced its intention to offer a new feature. According to it, the AI Companion will be able to support the creation of email replies. Through artificial intelligence, the emphasis will be on the appropriate tone and length of replies. At the same time, it is reported that Zoom will be able to save missed conversations, allowing you to have a broader picture. In mid-autumn, Zoom's AI Companion will be able to automatically detect meeting intentions through messages in the conversation.

In the future, Zoom says users will be able to interact with AI to receive feedback on how to improve their presentation skills and track speaking time versus listening time during a meeting.
