Google Meet: Its interface will change if you are on the move

Google Meet

Sometimes it's not possible to sit down for a Google Meet call or conference and you're forced to join a meeting while on the go. Google is reportedly preparing a new feature for the Meet app for Android, specifically built to serve this use case, adding a simplified interface tailored to be easy to use at a glance.

The new interface isn't live yet, but Google has already added the underlying code, which 9to5Google was able to activate to give us a taste of the feature ahead of its launch. The new feature is aptly named "On-the-Go." When your phone detects that you're walking during a call, it will reportedly suggest that you enable On-the-Go, but it should also be possible to manually enable the feature in the call menu.

When you first use On-the-Go, a note will appear telling you that your camera and video are disabled to help you focus on your surroundings. The feature will also mute incoming video from participants. Once you’re in the interface, you’ll see just the four most important actions: A large unmute button, the option to raise your hand, a toggle audio output button, and a smaller end call button located at the bottom. At the top, a small X button will make it possible to disable On-the-Go at any time.

Suggestion: Google Meet: You can pause video feeds of individual tiles

The new interface hasn't been released yet, but given that it already looks functional in screenshots from 9to5Google, it's probably just a matter of time before Google starts testing it more broadly.

Google is working on making Meet a better background feature overall. The company just recently started rolling out a new picture-in-picture experience for Meet on Chrome, essentially turning the small window into a mini app. At the same time, Google added a 1080p mode for Workspace accounts, allowing you to broadcast your own image in better quality when you’re actually seated.
