Pokemon Sleep: Pikachu will sing you to sleep

Pokemon Sleep

First, Pokemon redesigned going out. Then, they redesigned walking. Now, 27 years later, Pokemon is redesigning sleeping.

It may sound weird, exaggerated, or both, but it's true. Pokemon Sleep is the most exciting video game of the year. However, the word "video game" should be used loosely. Sleep is a gamified sleep tracking aid that combines the franchise's cutest creatures with metrics to record essential biological function. Chances are you already sleep with smartphone next to your head. Now, Pokemon is the latest company to collect your biometric data while you sleep.

As the Pokemon Company revealed earlier this week in a closely watched livestream in honor of the franchise's birthday, Sleep is making Pokemon fans' dreams come true. The length and quality of your sleep earns you points, as well as opportunities to see more Pokemon. Depending on how well you sleep, you'll wake up to find more Pokemon on the island that serves as Pokemon Sleep. If your phone detects that you're sleeping in a "strange style" — like with your legs spread out in opposite directions — you might see a Slowpoke the next morning, lying in a similar position.

The more different ways you sleep, the more Pokemon you can see. Note that the game is compatible with the optional-but-not-yet-required Pokemon Go Plus-Plus that sits on your bed and features the sound of a Pikachu singing you sweetly to sleep. When Pokemon Sleep hits app stores later this year, you'll finally learn how to stop rolling around and kicking your partner every night.

As adorable and silly as it all sounds, Pokémon Sleep is still just another sleep tracking app. After 4 years, this project is finally complete .

The Pokemon Company accidentally announced Pokemon Sleep in May 2019. What might a sleep game look like?

The game was scheduled to release in 2020. For a myriad of reasons, it didn't come out in 2020. Or 2021. Or 2022. As the years passed, the 2019 tweet that served as its initial announcement became a rallying point, and so fans kept coming back wondering when Pokemon would help them sleep.

Sleep, after a short four-year nap out of the spotlight and after fans believed it was doomed to eternal dormancy, regardless of whether it's good or not, is worth a download for those who have been waiting so long.
