TikTok is raising the age limit for hosting livestreams on its platform, while also launching adults-only livestreams, which means streamers will be able to tailor content to accommodate an adult audience. Currently, users must be 16 or older to start a livestream. Starting November 23, users will need to be at least 18 to go live on the platform. TikTok is making this change in an effort to strengthen the safety of its community.
As for adult-only livestreams, TikTok plans to roll them out in the coming weeks. The company has already been testing the ability to restrict livestreams to viewers aged 18 and over since July. TikTok’s new 18+ age limit for livestreams doesn’t mean that users will broadcast inappropriate content, as the content is still subject to the app’s policies. Rather, it’s a way for creators to prevent minors from finding content that is aimed at an adult audience or that they may not be interested in.

“We plan to introduce a new way that will allow creators to choose whether they prefer to reach only an adult audience on their LIVE,” the company said in a post. “For example, something may be better suited for people over 18. Or, a host may be planning to talk about a difficult life experience and would feel more comfortable knowing the conversation is limited to adults.”
TikTok Live is becoming an increasingly core part of how creators use the platform and is a significant revenue stream for the company.
The new setting comes a few months after TikTok said it wanted to start identifying what content is appropriate for younger and older teens versus adults. TikTok had previously said it was developing a system that would limit teens’ access to certain types of content and ask creators to identify when their content is more appropriate for adults.

As part of these efforts, TikTok is setting a new age limit and launching the adults-only livestream feature.
Additionally, TikTok is rolling out an updated version of its keyword filtering tool that will send users a reminder and suggest new keywords they could add to their filter list. Creators can already use the app 's filtering tool to limit comments they deem inappropriate, but this update will take that feature a step further.

TikTok is also rolling out a new feature called “Multi-Guest” that allows hosts to go live with up to five other people with different layout options. The new feature can be used to host videos , answer questions, and more. Once the livestream starts, creators can tap the three dots to change a variety of settings, such as flipping the camera, adding effects and stickers, filtering comments, and adding moderators.
