When it comes to keeping your kids safe with their devices, Parental Controls are an important consideration. If you have Apple devices , including iPhones and iPads, at home, you have access to a powerful set of resources for controlling what your kids can do on their own devices. You just need to know how to set them up.
Here's what you'll need to do to set up Parental Controls on Apple devices:
Set content and privacy restrictions using Screen Time
To get started, you must have Screen Time for Family set up on your device.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Tap Turn on Screen Time.
- After reading a summary of what Screen Time can offer, tap Continue.
- If you're setting up Parental Controls on your child's iPhone , select This is My Child's iPhone
- Tap Downtime, then configure the times you want your child's iPhone to be offline. For example, you might want to prevent them from playing games or using social media after dinner. Regardless of the times you choose, calls and messages will still be available.
- Tap the back button, then tap App Limits. From there, you can choose how long your child can use different types of apps. For example, you can limit social media and games to two hours a day, then tap Set App Limit.
- Press the back button again and select Content & Privacy Restrictions . Then, turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions and create a passcode so you can access Screen Time Parental Controls , but your child can't

This process must be done on your device — not your child's device. After you set up Parental Controls, you, as the family organizer, can approve or deny requests from your child to make purchases, such as buying a new app for their phone.
- Open the Settings.
- Select your name at the top of the screen.

- Select Ask to Buy.
- Tap the name of your desired family member.
- Use the toggle button to turn Ask to Buy on or off.
