Twitter says it's experimenting with 'unmentioning'

Twitter is experimenting with an “unmentioning” feature that will allow users to remove themselves from conversations. For now, it’s limited to certain users and the web version, but it looks like a very useful way to “clean up” your mentions.

What should you do if you're one of the few Twitter users who sees the "unmentioning" feature? Simply select "leave this conversation" from a tweet's options to avoid constant notifications about a conversation you never wanted to participate in.

“We’re experimenting with Unmentioning – a way to help you stay calm and distance yourself from conversations,” the tweet reads. The company posted a short GIF of what the feature will look like on its Twitter Safety account.

The “leave this conversation” option will appear in the menu that pops up in the corner of a tweet on the web version of Twitter. (It also includes the “mute” and “embed” options.) Clicking “leave this conversation” brings up another menu that details what happens when you leave a conversation: your username is unmarked, it stops any future mentions of that conversation, and, perhaps most importantly, it stops notifications.

Twitter researcher and reverse-engineer Jane Manchun Wong posted an apparent screenshot of the “leave this conversation” feature on Twitter in February.

The company has tested or developed numerous features aimed at keeping you safe, including a safe anti-harassment feature that automatically blocks malicious users. This, however, may be one of the most practical features. Twitter users often face unwanted mentions from friends, spammers , and others. This allows you to leave conversations that bore you without much fuss, leaving you to focus on the ones that matter to you.
