Elon Musk buys 9% of Twitter shares

Musk owns 73,486,938 shares of Twitter, which represents a 9.2% stake, according to a 13G filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission published Monday.

The stock market revelation comes as Musk emerges as one of the loudest and most prominent critics of Twitter's moderation efforts, which in recent years has made efforts to combat everything from harassment and death threats to misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Musk is one of the most prominent Twitter users and has more than 80 million followers on the platform.

Musk, who the Bloomberg Billionaires Index lists as the world's richest person with a fortune of about $273 billion, said he has "seriously" considered creating a competitor to the company. In a post last month, he said the social media platform has completely failed to uphold the principles of free speech and fundamentally undermines democracy.

Musk's stake in Twitter is considered a passive investment, meaning he's a long-term investor who wants to minimize his buying and selling of shares. But the large stake, along with Musk's recent comments, suggests he could be seeking to exert some control over the company.
