Interestingly, the job posting refers to homeOS as a “mobile platform,” which emphasizes that it is ostensibly similar to iOS and watchOS instead of macOS and tvOS, but it’s unclear why that is.
The operating system could be a new brand of Apple's current smart home software – in the same way that iOS for iPad was renamed to iPadOS and OS X changed to macOS – or possibly an entirely new operating system.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman commented that Apple still lacks a “unified strategy” for the smart home market. It’s possible that homeOS is software designed to lead a more centralized smart home strategy, perhaps unifying the HomePod’s audioOS and the tvOS . Apple is also rumored to be developing a combined Apple TV and HomePod device and a HomePod with a display.
