Microsoft Edge browser: Why can it be considered better than Chrome?

Google , Chrome browser has been the most popular browser since it was introduced in 2008. But many argue that Chrome has some problems and are starting to turn to the Microsoft Edge browser version which is based on the same Chromium code as Chrome.

The Microsoft Edge browser is now available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, so you can use it across all your devices. It offers the same browsing data sync options as Chrome, which are tied to your Microsoft account. And because it's based on the same Chromium code, it supports all the browser extensions available in Google Chrome.

Therefore, it is clear that Microsoft Edge offers many of Chrome's features and therefore the transition is not difficult.

Of course, no one can overlook the advantages of Chrome. One of the most basic is the connection to every Google service.

But what are the elements that distinguish the Microsoft Edge browser?

Edge is lighter (lightweight)

Chrome uses a lot of system resources. The browser is known for using a lot of RAM and the negative impact it can have on a laptop's battery life. Chrome engineers are working on fixing these issues and have made some progress, but it's still a significant issue.

Gizmodo tests on a Windows computer showed that when opening the same sites in both browsers, Chrome consumed more CPU time, more memory, and had higher disk usage than Edge.

In terms of page loading speed and web browsing , the results were similar.

In any case, everyone should do their own testing on their own system to see if Chrome or Edge browser is better, based on the sites they typically visit. A few days of testing should be enough to give you a sense of how they respond and at what speed, and you can also see if there is any impact on battery life. Watch the Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOSto do these checks.

Microsoft Edge browser offers greater privacy

Privacy is one of the most important issues today. Switching browsers won't necessarily fix the problem of online tracking , but Edge offers a more user-friendly and comprehensive approach to better online protection . The Basic, Balanced , and Strict options are well thought out and explain in detail what users need to know.

Google Chrome browser has a similar set of cookie blocking options, but they are not as easy to configure. Edge also allows you to delete your collected browsing data every time you close the program, while Chrome does not have such an option (note, however, that Chrome allows for automatic deletion of data after a certain period of time, via your Google account settings).

Also, Microsoft Edge can be considered better than Chrome, just because it is not owned by Google. Not that Microsoft is the perfect choice when it comes to privacy. But Google’s entire business model is based on collecting as much data as possible. Google is trying to replace cookie-based tracking with a system that works with aggregated data that is less personalized. However, there are still doubts about how beneficial this will be for users.

Overall, the difference between the two browsers when it comes to privacy and security isn't huge. Google has tried to make browsing safer, but no matter what we do, it relies heavily on ads and therefore collects data.

Microsoft Edge browser is more innovative

Microsoft engineers are constantly adding new features to Edge, many of which aren't available in Chrome (at least, not yet). For example, it has a built-in reading mode, which isn't available in Chrome unless users go to the flags page and enable it themselves. Edge can also read pages aloud for you. This is very useful.

Another feature that Edge recently introduced is vertical tabs on the side of the screen. It's not a new idea, as this has been available in Chrome for years. However, Edge gives you more flexibility.

Microsoft Edge also puts tabs that are not in use for a certain period of time into a "sleep state", without requiring any extension for this.

Finally, Edge has an interesting approach to saving groups of pages, which it calls “Collections.” You can use this feature to collect text, images, videos, and pages together, into groups.

Chrome

It's worth noting that the Chrome browser also has its own unique features. Tab grouping is one of the most recent additions, and built-in Chromecast is one of the most important.
