According to reports, over 500,000 Activision accounts may have been affected after an alleged hack, which resulted in the breach and leakage of user login details. Specifically, eSports site “Dexerto” reported that a data breach took place last Sunday. According to the site, the credentials used by users to access these accounts were leaked. In addition, the malicious actors behind the hack changed the account details so that they cannot be easily recovered by the legitimate owners. Activision accounts are mainly used by players of the popular video-game franchise “Call of Duty”, including Warzone, Modern Warfare and Mobile.
Several eSports and gaming Twitter accounts have also reported the suspected breach. The data breach was first reported by Twitter account “oRemyy” and later confirmed by other content creators, including TheGamingRevolution and Prototype Warehouse . The GamingRevolution account revealed that the malicious actors behind the hack appear to be creating 1,000 accounts every 10 minutes.
However, an Activision spokesperson stated on September 22:
“Activision Call of Duty accounts have not been compromised. Reports of a breach are untrue. We are investigating all privacy. As always, we encourage players to take precautions to protect their accounts at all times. Please visit our player support page for more information, including a helpful set of tips and step-by-step instructions.”
It is currently unclear how the hackers breached the accounts, while it is estimated that the breach could be the result of a credential-stuffing attack.
So, players are advised to change passwords as soon as possible. They should also disconnect Battlenet, PSN, Xbox, or other accounts associated with their Activision account to protect them. Additionally, if they have any payment information saved, they should delete it. Finally, Dexerto reports that unfortunately, Activision accounts do not have two-factor authentication (2FA). Therefore, players should simply monitor their account for any changes.
