Google is preparing a tool to spy on its employees

There have been unrest at offices lately between employees and leadership.

Earlier this month, Google employees accused leadership of wanting to develop an internal surveillance tool that would monitor employees if they tried to organize a protest or discuss their labor rights.

The employees said they discovered a group within the company that created this new tool and installed it on all employees' computers to search internal systems. The toolis therefore able to report a calendar event created by an employee and added to it by more than 100 people.

A company spokesperson told Alphabet Inc that all of these claims are false.

The conflicting views of the tool appear to be causing tension between Google's leaders and unionized employees.

On October 21, dozens of employees at Google's Zurich office held an event concerning workers' rights, and last month the employees in Pittsburgh voted to join the United Steelworkers.

The company's tool is expected to be released in late October, according to an employee who posted it last week. Two other Google executives in California said the tool was added to their computers this week.

The work on the tool appears to have started in early September, according to two Google employees. In late September, it was reviewed by Google's data protection team, which approved it.

Google said that the tool has been developed for months and has undergone standardized confidential information, security and legal reviews.
