Creative Commons has officially launched a new search engine. The CC Search service allows users to search for free images under the Creative Commons license. According to the official announcement, over 300 million images have already been indexed. So there is a good chance that you will find one that you like and want to use.
In February 2017, Creative Commons began developing a new search engine. The previous search engine displayed links to other services, such as Google Images, Flickr, and Pixabay, in its results.
This meant that it wasn't really a search engine, but rather collected links from other search engines.
The new Creative Commons was designed to be a simpler yet more comprehensive search engine.
However, indexing 300 million images from across the web was a major project, which is why the CC Search service spent over two years in beta.
Now, Creative Commons has officially launched CC Search, its final release. CC Search offers a simple yet powerful way to search the entire Commons archive. This consists of the aforementioned 300 million images across 19 collections.
According to the Blog , when you perform a search using the CC Search service, you filter images that are “pulled from open APIs and the shared detection dataset.”
The new Creative Commons search makes things much simpler. Simply search for a word or phrase and you'll see images that the Creative Commons algorithm thinks match your search term. You'll immediately see the source of the images as well as their Creative Commons license.
If you want to filter the results, click the Filter button. You can filter for images with “Commercial Use” or “Modify or Adapt” licenses.
You can also limit your search to specific CC licenses, limit your search to specific image providers, or search by a creator.
Not familiar with Creative Commons licenses ? Choose the appropriate one. The licenses are now also available in Greek.
