Google has announced the top trending searches for 2024.

Google is the leading search engine, with millions of users searching for a variety of topics every day. The rise of Generative AI chatbots and social apps may one day threaten Google's dominance, but for now, most people turn to Google to search for whatever they want.
Here we’ll look at some of the top user searches for 2024, based on Google. However, what we’ll be looking at aren’t the most popular search terms for 2024.Instead, “Year in Search” reports what increased in popularity in 2024, specifically which queries “had a big increase in traffic, for a consistent period in 2024 compared to 2023.”

If we were to look at the exact search terms, then topics like weather would be in the top spots. The goal is to exclude these general, fixed searches, to determine what exactly people wanted to know over the past year.
The list below only includes text-based searches on google.com. It does not include searches on other Google services, such as YouTube, or queries passed through the Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot.

Other trends
Election data
Donald Trump couldn't be missing from the top ten after the recent US elections. However, the same is not true for his opponent, Kamala Harris. Trump was also the No. 1 name on the global people search trend list (Kamala was third). The incident with the attempted assassination of him made the list of the top 10 news stories worldwide.
Top news trends
In 2023, Google said that the Israel/Gaza was at the top of news trends, but that trend did not continue to increase in 2024. Instead, this year the US election topped the list, along with the Olympics, Rafah and Iran, and the Menendez brothers. Natural weather disasters were also a top search topic, as was the Crowdstrike outage.

Dubai chocolate
Google may be deliberately ignoring search trends on social media platforms, but it can't avoid them. For example, posts about Dubai chocolate went viral on social media , especially on TikTok. As a result, many media outlets started writing about them, and the trend reached Google.
Other examples of searches that started on social media and ended up on Google involve the burnt toast and orange peel theories.
Google’s top searches often reflect the latest global interests, major news stories, cultural moments and social media trends being discussed in traditional media. From breaking news to entertainment trends, these searches provide valuable insights because they help us understand what people are interested in and talking about. Each year, this list includes a wide range of topics, including technology, sports, health and lifestyle, which are constantly evolving to reflect the pulse of society.
