Facebook: millions of passwords in plain text

Facebook has revealed that it stores hundreds of millions of user passwords in plain text. According to the company, the passwords were only accessible to 20,000 of its employees, and it is confident that none of them used them maliciously….

In a blog post today, Facebook announced that during a routine audit conducted in January 2019, they discovered hundreds of millions of passwords of the social network's users that had been stored in plain text in one of its internal data storage systems. Facebook

The passwords were accessible to about 20,000 Facebook employees, but the publication says they were not accessible to anyone outside the company.

“To be clear, these passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook, and we have found no evidence so far that anyone internally used them maliciously. We estimate that we will need to notify hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users, tens of millions of other Facebook users, and tens of thousands of Instagram users,” said Pedro Canahuati, VP Engineering in the company’s security division.

Facebook has fixed the problem and said it will begin notifying the roughly 600 million Facebook Lite, Facebook and Instagram users whose passwords were exposed to company employees, although the largest social network still claims that no passwords were leaked to anyone outside of Facebook.

If you are concerned about your security, don't wait for an email from the company. Change the password you use on Facebook services immediately.
