Piriform has released a new version of its file cleaning software CCleaner. Version 5.50reportedly features new options for checking for program updates.
2018 was not a very pleasant year for Piriform, the developer of CCleaner software and parent company of Avast.
The integration of telemetry into the application, without informing users and without options to disable it, together with the forced automatic updates to new versions of CCleaner, was two of the company's biggest mistakes for 2018.
The new CCleaner 5.50 version, however, comes with a new “Updates” menu in the program options. It provides users with control over application updates according to the release notes.
CCleaner therefore appears to grant update control to the end user. Piriform distinguishes updates as “important” that ensure that “CCleaner runs safely and smoothly” and as simple product updates that simply suggest the upgrade.
Product updates are defined as updates that “provide the latest product improvements and updates to the cleaning system”.
Automatic updates will only be the important updates, but still the end user must allow them. After the automatic download and installation, users will receive a notification that informs them of what happened to their system.
Simple product updates will be applied manually only to free users. Pro version users will have the ability to apply updates automatically.
The option to display notifications for new updates is disabled by default. Thus, those who wish to receive information must enable the feature.
As it appears, Piriform is trying much harder after the scandals that erupted. The company added more privacy options to the program. It remains to be seen if all that it promises with the new version works.
Of course, things would have gone much better if Piriform hadn't taken advantage of the trust that the application's users have shown them for so long.
