Mozilla: Firefox support ends for XP and Vista

Mozilla announced today that it will discontinue all support for the Firefox browser on Windows XP and Vista starting in June 2018.

“As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Windows Vista, Firefox users on these platforms can expect security updates until that date,” Mozilla said in a statement released today.MozillaEarlier this year, Mozilla already released Firefox 52 ESR (Extended Support Release) for Firefox users on XP and Vista computers.

The move of XP and Vista users to Firefox ESR had been announced since December 2016, when Mozilla also stated that it would provide a final answer on Firefox support for XP and Vista in September 2017.

Apparently that date has arrived (and passed) and after an internal review, Mozilla announced that it will stop all support for Firefox on the two Windows platforms as of June 2018.

Mozilla apparently took its cue from Google, which ended support for XP and Vista starting with Chrome version 50, released in April 2016, along with other older platforms OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion, and OS X 10.8.

Firefox users who still need a browser for their old XP and Vista machines will have to stick with those old Firefox and Chrome versions, but both Mozilla and Google have recommended that users upgrade to Windows 8.1 or later for security reasons.

Microsoft has stopped supporting XP and Vista since April 2014 and April 2017, respectively.

Last year, Mozilla also announced the end of Firefox support for older versions of OS X, such as 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8.
