Yesterday, hackers hacked into the account of Twitter CEO Jack Dorseyand posted offensive and racist tweets and retweets. The group behind the attackis called Chuckle Squad.
The offensive tweets only stayed on the platform for a short time. They gradually started to be removed and now none of them exist.
An hour and a half after the attack, Twitter issued a statement saying: “The account is now secure and there is no indication that Twitter’s systems have been compromised.”
Twitter blamed mobile phone service for the attack. Specifically, it said: "The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to the carelessness of the mobile phone provider." So Twitter suspects that the hackers were able to send the tweets using text messages.
Apparently the tweets came via Cloudhopper. This is a company that used Twitter for an extra help from service . Thanks to it, we can write a text message (from the phone number associated with our Twitter account) and have that text uploaded to Twitter. In this case, the source of the tweet is given as “Cloudhopper”.
Last week, the accounts of several other celebrities were hacked. Many of the victims claim that the breach occurred after a SIM swapping attack carried out by employees of the company AT&T.
Following last week's attacks, an AT&T spokesperson said the company is working with authorities to restore customer service and is looking into ways to secure accounts. However, the company had no comment on yesterday's attack.
This isn't the first time Dorsey has been hacked . In 2016, the OurMine group hacked Dorsey's Twitter account to advertise its services. The tweet included a video and a link to OurMine's website. OurMine has previously hacked the accounts of several other CEOs, including Facebook 's Mark Zuckerberg and Google 's Sundar Pichai .
