Exactly 40 years ago, Sony first introduced the Walkman device and changed the way we listen to music!
The Walkman portable cassette player, which for the first time allowed someone to carry it in their bag and listen to music without disturbing their neighbors or anyone standing next to them, was first released on the market on July 1, 1979.
The portable cassette player revolutionized the way people listen to music.
The Walkman wasn't the first of its kind, but it was the first affordable and easy-to-use portable music player . Others, like the German Stereobelt, were too bulky and expensive, so they never became very popular.
In its heyday, the Walkman was synonymous with portable music players, as Kleenex was with tissues and Xerox was with printing machines.
The Walkman continued to sell well even after the CD era. Innovations like the 1981 Walkman II – a little bigger than a cassette tape – and the 1984 Discman helped Sony stay on top of the portable music world.
However, its sales eventually began to decline when Apple released the iPod in 2001 and digital music downloads began to dominate. However, we will always remember with nostalgia the good times it once gave us!
