Gaming a smartphone or tablet has been a hot topic for the past couple of years. Mobile devices are now powerful enough to run some really good games. Additionally, game streaming is now possible, thanks to advances in processing and data transfer technologies. While cloud gaming without any hiccups or lag is still just a dream, home streaming is currently a pretty good option to use. Sony has had home streaming on the PlayStation 4 for years, but it was only available if you had a Sony Xperia phone or tablet.
But this is no longer the case!
Today, the PlayStation 4 is getting firmware update 6.50, which opens the doors for iOS users. If you have an iPhone 7 or iPad 6thgeneration (or newer) running iOS 12.1, you'll be able to download the brand new PlayStation Remote Play app from the App Store and connect it to your console at home.
Sony is slowly pushing Remote Play to more and more systems. It's currently available on Xperia phones as well as Windows and Mac computers. It came as a big surprise that the feature is coming to iOS, but it's still not officially available for any other Android phone, except for the Sony Xperia.
Now, when it comes to gaming on your iPhone, there are still a few limitations. First, the Sony DualShock 4 controller can't be paired with your iOS device, so you can only play with the on-screen buttons, which is too bad. We don't have any information at this time on whether it will work with a standard MFi controller.
Remote Play supports MFi controllers! There are still some issues, so for playing more complex games that use all the buttons on the controller, it's not the ideal option. But since there's still a slight lag when playing via Remote Play, you won't use it for FPS games anyway. It can work great for simple games or turn-based strategies, like XCOM. Also, don't forget that it's for home streaming only. Your mobile device and your PS4 must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
