Are SSO buttons, like “Sign-in with Apple,” better than passwords?

Apple

Apple recently announced that it will soon launch a new product that will help users log in to sites without having to provide their email ID or create a new account. The new product, called “Sign-in with Apple,” is similar to Google and Facebook’s Single Sign-on services

Apple emphasized that this new product is another way to enhance user privacy by reducing the amount of personal data sent to websites. In addition, it can create proxy email addresses so that your regular email ID is not shared with the site.

Google 's director of product management , Mark Risher, has said that using Single Sign-on buttons is preferable to using usernames and passwords, even if users choose the company's competitors' products. Risher is responsible for the "Sign-in with Google" button.

One of the most important advantages of Single Sign-on buttons (like Apple's) is that they address the issue of password reuse. Users are forced to create multiple accounts. So, to be sure that they won't forget their passwords, they use the same one for all their accounts. However, this is dangerous, since if one account is compromised, attackers will gain access to the rest. For this reason, many companies are trying to use solutions that don't require a password.

What do developers think about Apple's "Sign-in" button?

According to Wired, app developers are divided on Apple's move. Some are positive about it, while others are not. Most believe it can indeed help improve privacy, but there's still some thought to be given to it.
