Windows Sandbox: What it is and how to install it

Windows One of the most important features of Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 release) is Sandbox. Sandbox is a virtual machine in Windows 10 that allows you to test various programs, extensions, and siteswithout risking infecting the regular operating system. Sandbox is an ideal option for those who want to be safe without installing a special virtual machine program, such as VirtualBox, Hyper-V, or VMWare.

Installing the Sandbox

Installation requirements:

  • Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise build 1903 or later. Can also be installed on Windows 10 Home, but requires more work.
  • AMD64 architecture
  • Virtualization capabilities in BIOS
  • At least 4GB of RAM
  • At least 1 GB of free disk space
  • At least 2-core CPU

Steps to install Windows Sandbox:

  • Click on the “Start” button and search for “Windows Features”. Then click on “Turn Windows features on or off control panel”.
  • When the “Windows Features” control panel opens, scroll down and check the “Windows Sandbox” tab. Then, click OK.
  • After the installation is complete, you will be prompted to reboot.
  • Windows Sandbox is now installed.

Using the Sandbox

You can use Sandbox by clicking “Start” and then “Windows Sandbox”.

The first time, it may take some time to load.

With Sandbox, you can transfer the filesyou want to control. Transferring is simple. Find the file you want on the main Windows operating system (Host), right-click on the file and click Copy.

Then, go to Sandbox (Guest), right-click on the desktop and click Paste. The transfer is done.

Sandbox is a very useful tool, since whatever you do doesn't affect your computer.

Corrections

Windows Sandbox is very easy to use, even for users who don't have much computer knowledge, and it does its job very well.

However, it needs some improvements. For example, it would be good to be able to scan email attachments , which are Word or Excel files. These are often used by hackers to distribute malware, such as ransomware, banking trojans, and more.

Unfortunately, if you want to check any Office files, such as Word and Excel files, you will need to install Office in Sandbox.

Microsoft should include some way to test malicious attachments. With this addition, Sandbox would be the ideal tool.
