Instagram: the founders are gone, what will change?

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are leaving Facebook, six years after the social network acquired their company Instagram.
The departure of the Instagram founders comes at a time when their idea is being praised as charismatic and during a year of very bad reviews for Facebook.
So with all the challenges facing Facebook's core application, it will be important to continue to protect Instagram's vision and not allow it to deteriorate. Facebook has long faced distrust from its users (and not only), governments, security experts, and privacy activists.
The reason for Systrom and Krieger's departure was their dissatisfaction with Zuckerberg, who has long tried to exert greater control over Instagram. It is not clear, however, what exactly angered Systrom and Krieger.
Wall Street didn’t seem thrilled with the news, as Facebook shares fell on the morning after the announcement that Instagram’s founders were leaving.
It’s too early to say what this leadership change will bring to Instagram, a service that recently reached 1 billion monthly active users. However, below we’ll venture to mention three changes we might see very soon, under Facebook’s leadership.
More cross-service notifications to encourage cross-posting of Facebook and Instagram data
One of the sources of tension between Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram’s founders has been Zuckerberg’s desire to show more cross-posting between Facebook and Instagram.
TechCrunch reported that Facebook was in the process of adding a shortcut to Instagram to the bookmarks menu, while Bloomberg has reported that some Instagram users had started receiving notifications when their friends posted photos to the main Facebook app.
After Systrom and Krieger resigned, they are being replaced by a senior Facebook executive. This will pave the way for cross-platform information sharing between the two services.
There are many reasons why Facebook wants to do this. The number of active users in North America – where the average income per user is higher than in the rest of the world – has remained stable on Facebook’s main app, while it has been very high on Instagram. In addition, Instagram’s user base is younger than Facebook’s, so acquiring these Instagram users is critical for Facebook to build a customer base on two different apps.

Zuckerberg said he believes more users will share content on Instagram Stories instead of the traditional news feed in the coming years. Instagram Stories have proven very promising so far, as they have more daily active users than Facebook’s Stories.
Most ads come from Facebook, not Instagram, but Instagram has more end-user engagement. Facebook is not going to miss the opportunity to exploit more advertisers than Instagram. We should expect more aggressive advertising since the Systrom and Krieger era.
Experimenting with Instagram algorithms
The new head of Instagram could be Adam Mosseri, who was responsible for Facebook's News Feed. Mosseri was previously one of the people responsible for redesigning Facebook's Big News. This year, he prioritized presenting content from family and friends over content from pages and the like.
Instagram's News Feed faces different challenges than Facebook's. Fake news is still a problem, but less acute than Facebook's, given that the platform has fewer users. However, Instagram has seen more bullying, which is especially worrying given the younger age of Instagram's members. Last year, the company added a filter that users could add to hide offensive comments. This year, it added a filter that aims to hide comments that “infringe on a person’s well-being or health.”
At a time when Facebook is facing similar problems with toxic speech, Instagram could be an important testing ground for determining what it takes to develop and maintain a healthier News Feed.
