Apple's parental controls allow searching for pornographic and violent material

Apple 's parental controls in iOS 12 are rather inconsistent: some sex-related terms are blocked, but some other results are allowed, such as sites that support terrorism, as reported by a sex education site known as O.school .Apple

The settings are under Screen Time, which Apple introduced last month in iOS 12. Using Screen Time, parents can set an iPhone to block inappropriate content for their children. But according to the findings and confirmed by The Verge, the filter does not allow searches like “safe sex,” “sex assault hotline,” and “sex education,” but does allow searches related to bombings, poisonings, and even membership in a terrorist group. Apple is only banning sites that mention sex and has not extended the restrictions to violence, extremism, or even more specific pornography terms. For example, some pornographic subreddits are still available for search.

Despite Apple's flawed censorship filter, with enough careful selection and thought, teens could conceivably search for what they want even if it's seemingly blocked. The filter does a very poor job of keeping out inappropriate content, like the neo-Nazi news site The Daily Stormer, and wrongly censors some sites, like Teen Vogue!

If you have a device, you can go to Screen Time, then tap Content & Privacy Restrictions, then tap Content Restrictions. Scroll down to Web Content and tap Limit Adult Websites. Apple also gives parents the option to allow children to visit only approved websites and not access certain locations, which seems like a better alternative.
